Updated at 2018-04-05 20:17

These notes are about writing in general, not strictly in a specific context. Related to typography and copywriting.

The basics of writing anything can be summarized in these core rules:

1. Have a message. Always focus on having something to say. Your message is the main reason you are writing; not your paycheck nor any other reason. You have information and you aim to communicate it. You project knowledge onto the reader.

2. Aim for the absolute minimum to effectively deliver that message. Review your text and remove the unnecessary. This applies to all form of writing; novels, blogs, research papers, user interfaces, etc. Novels and sometimes user interfaces try to invoke certain emotions with the message but then it becomes part of the message.

Break any past or future guidelines if you are neglecting them to supports delivering your message.
